Post Ultrasound Discharge Instructions

Post-Ultrasound Expectations

  1. Ultrasound Report:
    • If applicable, your pet’s ultrasound report will be provided to you as soon as possible.
    • Contact us if you have any questions about the findings or next steps.
  2. No Incisions or Sutures:
    • Ultrasounds are non-invasive, so there are no incisions or sutures to manage.
  3. Drowsiness:
    • Your pet may appear drowsy or lethargic after receiving a general anesthetic.
    • Full recovery typically takes 24–48 hours.
  4. Clipped Areas:
    • Small areas of fur may be shaved on the legs, neck, or abdomen for the administration of anaesthesia or to collect blood samples.

Activity Restrictions

  • Keep your pet on a lead and supervise them during walks or stair usage to prevent accidents.
  • Minimize activity until their coordination and alertness have returned fully.

Eating and Drinking

  • Water should always be available.
  • Offer food as usual, though some pets may not eat immediately after anaesthesia.
  • If your pet refuses food or water beyond 24 hours, contact us.

Bathroom Habits

  • Urination: Ensure your pet urinates within 24 hours of returning home.
  • Defecation: Expect bowel movements within 1–2 days.
  • When to Call Us:
      • No urination by the following morning/midday.
      • Signs of discomfort, straining, or lethargy.

Bandage and Medications

  1. IV Bandage:
    • If a colored bandage (vet wrap) was placed over your pet’s leg, remove it within 30 minutes of arriving home.
  2. Medications:
    • Administer any medications as directed on the prescribed medication sheet.
    • Contact us with any questions regarding dosage or side effects.
  3. Elizabethan Collar (Buster Collar):
    • If a Buster collar was provided, ensure your pet wears it unless otherwise instructed by the surgeon.

When to Contact Us

  • Persistent drowsiness beyond 48 hours.
  • Refusal to eat or drink for more than 24 hours.
  • No urination or defecation within the expected timeframe.
  • Any unusual behaviour, such as quietness, straining, or signs of pain.
