Comprehensive Pre-Operative Guide for Cat Spaying (Ovariohysterectomy)

At vet.co.uk, Poplar Vets and Wood Wharf Vets we prioritize your dog’s health and well-being during their castration procedure. Below, you’ll find detailed information about the process, preparation steps, benefits, and potential risks associated with this routine surgery.

What is Dog Castration?

Castration is a surgical procedure involving the removal of both testicles while leaving the scrotum intact. This is a permanent procedure designed to provide several health and behavioral benefits, including:

  • Eliminating the Risk of Testicular Tumors: Reducing your dog’s risk of developing serious testicular diseases.
  • Preventing Unwanted Pregnancies: Helps control the pet population and may reduce roaming tendencies.
  • Lower Risk of Prostate Problems: Castration may decrease the likelihood of prostate issues later in life.
  • Reduction in Testosterone-Driven Behaviors: While castration doesn’t “calm” dogs, it can reduce mounting and other testosterone-driven activities.

Preparation for the Procedure

  1. Lungworm Treatment:
    • Lungworm can significantly increase the risk of bleeding (haemorrhaging) during surgery.
    • We recommend a minimum of two months of lungworm treatment prior to surgery.
    • Lungworm testing is available on the day of the procedure but starting treatment earlier is strongly advised.
  2. Brucella Testing for Imported Dogs:
    • Brucella is an infectious disease found in dogs from many countries.
    • If your dog has been recently imported, a Brucella test is highly recommended before the surgery.
  3. Fasting Instructions:
    • Feed your dog dinner as usual the evening before the surgery.
    • Do not provide food after midnight or breakfast on the morning of the procedure.
    • Water is allowed overnight but should be removed when you wake up.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

  1. Collar or Surgical Vest:
    • Your dog will be discharged with a Buster collar, which should be worn at all times for 10 days to prevent licking or scratching at the surgical site.
    • Alternatively, a surgical vest may be used (available for purchase independently).
  2. Follow-Up Checks:
    • We offer complimentary post-operative checks at 3 and 10 days to ensure a smooth recovery.
  3. Monitor for Complications:
  • Keep an eye on the surgical site for swelling, redness, or discharge.
  • Contact our team immediately if you notice any signs of distress, such as lethargy, lack of appetite, or excessive discomfort.

Potential Risks and Complications

While dog castration is a routine procedure, it carries some risks, including:

  • Anaesthetic Death: Rare but possible.
  • Bleeding (Haemorrhage): During or after the procedure.
  • Wound Complications: Infection, breakdown, or fluid accumulation (seroma).
  • Damage to the Penis: Uncommon but possible.
  • Other Risks: Pain, bruising, suture material reactions, or clipper rash.

We take every precaution to minimize these risks, using the latest techniques and monitoring equipment to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort.
