Vaccinations
Vaccines help prevent many illnesses that affect dogs. Vaccinating your dog helps him live a long and healthy life. Not only are there different vaccines for different diseases, there are different types and combinations of vaccines.
What Exactly Are Vaccines?
Vaccines help prepare the body’s immune system to fight the invasion of disease-causing organisms. Vaccines contain antigens, which look like the disease-causing organism to the immune system but don’t actually cause disease. When the vaccine is introduced to the body, the immune system is mildly stimulated. If a dog is ever exposed to the real disease, his immune system is now prepared to recognize and fight it off entirely or reduce the severity of the illness.
Worms
Healthy looking animals can carry worms, so it’s important to worm pets regularly. Worms can cause suffering, illness and even death. Some types of worms can be spread between pets and people and can cause diseases.
The two main types of worms are Tapeworms (Dipylidium species) and Roundworms (Toxocara species).
Roundworms are spread through the environment. Tapeworms are spread through an intermediate host (usually the flea). The intermediate host is necessary to form part of the life-cycle; more development stages take place in the intermediate host.
Both types of worms are easy to eliminate and suitable preparations are available through your veterinary surgeon.
Fleas and Ticks
Most dogs will suffer from a flea infestation at some point in their lives. It used to be that they were most at risk during the warmer months; however, with modern day central heating we now provide a lovely warm environment for fleas all year round. For this reason, treatment against fleas should be provided throughout the year.
Some dogs will develop a hypersensitivity to flea saliva and this can lead to an itchy reaction. One or two fleas would be quite enough to cause a marked irritation. Most flea reactions in dogs are seen on the lower back area, above the tail.
Fleas are also the intermediate host of the tapeworm. Therefore it is important to remember when treating your dog for fleas, to treat him for tapeworms too.
Effective flea treatment and control involves treating both the environment and the dog.
Dental Care
Imagine how your teeth would look and how your breath would smell if you didn’t brush your teeth regularly – it’s the same for your pet. Here you can read simple and easy guide how to start brushing your pet’s teeth.
How to start brushing pet’s teeth with Virbac Enzymatic Toothpaste for dogs and cats.
Day 1: Gently stroke the outside of your pet’s cheeks with your finger only (no brush) and slowly lift the lip for about 30 seconds. Reward, praise and treat at the end of the session.
Day 2: Repeat Day 1 and also place a small amount of toothpaste on the end of your finger and let your pet sample it.
Day 3: Repeat Day 2 but this time gently run your finger or finger toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste over your pet’s teeth. Always reward with a treat and praise.
Day 4: Repeat Day 3 adding 15 seconds time to running your finger or finger toothbrush over your pet’s teeth. Always reward with a treat and praise.
Day 5: If all is going well run your finger over the teeth for 30 second and then gently insert the toothbrush and again run over the teeth for 30 seconds.
Day 6: Repeat as Day 5 and increase the time by 30 seconds.
Day 7: By now you should be aiming to spend at least one minute on each side of the mouth.
Helpful hints:
Be patient – take time with the process or else your pet will resist.
Praise always – it’s a new experience for you and your pet. Praising your pet will make them more receptive.
Remember – to always put a small amount of animal toothpaste on your finger or toothbrush. Your pet will like the taste and will associate it, the praise and the treats with tooth brushing.
Rewards – always reward your pet with treats at the end of each session.
Stop – if there is any sign of aggression stop immediately. Call your vet for further advise.
Human toothpaste – is for humans and not for pets. It can cause stomach problems in pets.
