Dealing with timecoded quicktime files

Andrew Pearson, Broadcast Engineer

Until recently, its not been possible to preserve the timecode attached to Quicktime files when importing and exporting from Avid.

However, one of the VET trainers has discovered that this feature has now been included in version 3.5 of the Media Composer software, although Avid haven't yet told anyone about it!

If you dont have version 3.5 yet, dont despair! Heres a simple workaround using some free software called Metacheater.

It's available for Mac and Windows here: http://www.staticpictures.com/metacheater

Using Metacheater, you can create an ALE, complete with timecode, and import it into a bin in Media Composer. This will create a set of offline master clips with the correct timecode in place. Batch import them all by selecting their matching Quicktimes.

Metacheater is also extremely useful for RED workflows - check out our RED post course
