Case study

Serdar Ferit

Filmmaker/editor/director

Serdar got to know VET two years ago. "At the time, I was unemployed, not particularly happy, more of an amateur really; nowhere near as competent as I am now."

With the help of various bursaries, Serdar did a variety of Avid certified training courses, a media business skills course and most recently some digital camera training.

“Things started looking up for me, first with a 6 month freelance job teaching Filmmaking to a group of 16-24 year olds at college, and then the freelance work started picking up. The training I received from VET gave me more self-confidence and helped me present myself in a better, more professional way. Making my clients happy was an important element of getting on as well, because happy clients were willing to recommend me for other jobs.”

Serdar recently produced, directed and edited “Elevator Music”, a funny short film about the delights of modern gadget usage, which was received very well at festivals in Malmo, Ankara and on Current TV, where it got to number one.

“VET made a great contribution to my professional development. The training there exposed me to industry professionals who I would have otherwise never met. I would have struggled getting the wealth of knowledge provided on the courses anywhere else.”

Serdar is juggling several jobs, paid and unpaid. He is currently producing “Afraid of the light”, a black and white 16mm short by director Jonathan Wolff and has Assistant Directed on the Streetcar 9 Productions sit-com pilot “The diary of Tommy Crisp”, directed by David Knight and shot on HDV. He has been offered a contract by an online television channel Current TV. Asked what the nicest thing was he could say about VET, Serdar said “They don’t bull**** you, they offer you the real thing; it’s a totally professional learning environment with lots of experience on offer.”
